How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

I was so grateful that the look held. I had an hour long photo shoot in 90 degree sunny heat and was sweating like crazy. The hair didn't budge, fall or frizz. I got so many compliments! Everyone walking by was complimenting my look, telling me how beautiful I was. I even had cars honking as they drove by! Afterwards, I looked great walking into the reception dinner with my family. Before the wedding, I did a trial session where we discussed everything in detail and made a few final adjustments. On the big day, I felt absolutely beautiful. What I loved the most is that Anastasia has a very modern style — her hairstyles are contemporary and elegant, and her makeup is fresh and natural. My makeup lasted perfectly all day long without feeling heavy on my skin. I still looked like myself — just enhanced, glowing, and confident. The hair was absolutely stunning: it stayed flawless the entire day, but at the same time felt soft and flexible — no stiff hairspray buildup, no heavy, uncomfortable feeling. “Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening! “Rie was a lifesaver! I had initially reached out to a different vendor in September of 2024 and we had an ongoing conversation while I considered pricing through November. We had a verbal agreement to work together but before she sent me her contract she ghosted me. I thought it was because the holidays were coming up and we all get busy at the end of the year. But mid-January come along, I had not heard back, and I was a little over two months away from my wedding! I reached out to a ton of makeup artists, and Rie was among the first to respond. She was so understanding from the get-go and her kindness paired with her makeup style was what sold me! Immediately, I knew she was who I wanted to work for. Rie provided makeup services for me and five of my six bridesmaids by herself. She was even able to work with me to find time to do a makeup trial despite both our busy schedules (getting married in the off season I'm sure helped). She worked so efficiently and even finished before our scheduled time, and provided us all with little touch up kits. I tend to not wear too much makeup and the same goes for most of my bridesmaids, and Rie was able to take her "natural makeup" style and personalize it to everyone. I only wear makeup on special occasions, and when I do, I tend to be hyper aware of my face and the makeup on it. But Rie's application was so good, that I did not think about the makeup on my face once throughout the ten hour day. The natural makeup style might not be for everyone, the same way full glam is not for me, but if you lean that way, I highly recommend working with Rie!”

“Jasmine did my makeup on my wedding day, and I can't believe how fabulous I looked. It was a very hot day of 100 degrees, but my makeup lasted all night with no smudges, running, or creasing! I chose the option to do a bridal trial beforehand, which I highly recommend. I was able to see what I liked and what I didn't like so there were no surprises on the big day. I also chose the option to get a full-size lip gloss and powder to reapply when I needed it. Jasmine is also one of the sweetest people I have ever met, so it was so fun to work with her. Kate did my hair on my wedding day and it looked amazing! She used products that helped my hair hold a curl and keep all the flyaway hairs controlled. I also used clip in extensions, and she did a great job putting them in because I felt no tugging or pulling at all. Both Kate and Jasmine got my bridal party ready, and we all felt so beautiful.
