Cautionary Tale for Military Couples

Jeune Perche is a stunning venue—elegant, unique, and full of charm. From the start, we were so excited to celebrate our wedding there. Lauren was incredibly kind and accommodating throughout the booking process, even inviting us back for a second visit after we signed our contract. It’s clear she cares deeply about her couples and the space she’s created. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our wedding due to circumstances completely beyond our control. My husband is active duty military and his deployment was extended, meaning we could no longer have the wedding we planned. On top of that, we suffered two family losses, a pregnancy, and a miscarriage—all in the same year. When we shared this with Lauren, she expressed sympathy and offered to refund our deposit if another couple booked our date. While we appreciated the gesture, we also knew that was unlikely so close to the event. Ultimately, the deposit was kept. While she was contractually within her rights to do so, we hoped—given the extraordinary nature of our situation—that she might have chosen compassion over policy. Many of our other vendors refunded us in full, despite similar contract terms. Their empathy during an incredibly painful time made a real difference. We had hoped Jeune Perche would do the same. That money could have gone toward rebuilding our lives and supporting our family during a time of grief and military separation. We still think Jeune Perche is a beautiful venue, and Lauren was wonderful to work with in many ways. But we were disappointed that, despite such devastating and unavoidable circumstances, our deposit was not returned. In a service industry centered on love and celebration, a little more humanity would have meant everything.
