How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

It matched my hair perfectly and know one would have ever known that I had hair extensions in. The style came out exactly the way I wanted. I looked exactly like the photo that I had loved so much. She incorporated the fancy clip that I had purchased, and the long curls lasted all night long. I even looked great after I removed the extensions and rode out an additional full day with the curls! I was so grateful that the look held. I had an hour long photo shoot in 90 degree sunny heat and was sweating like crazy. The hair didn't budge, fall or frizz. I got so many compliments! Everyone walking by was complimenting my look, telling me how beautiful I was. I even had cars honking as they drove by! Afterwards, I looked great walking into the reception dinner with my family. I did not EVER have to touch my hair or adjust it. For a Florida girl with long, thick, wavy natural hair- this is unheard of in the heat and humidity! MrsHercules worked a miracle on my hair. For my make-up- my face lasted all day and night too! I was sure that it had melted off in the sun during our photos, but when we were done I went to freshen up and nothing had changed. I was still 100% perfect. What a relief! I was so worried that I was going to walk into dinner like a hot mess and I had nothing to worry about at all- MrsHercules had me covered! I did touch up my lips, but that was just because we had a bunch of photos of us kissing. She even gave a little touch up kit that was perfect. It had a little makeup puff with some powder and a lip touch up. My girl knew exactly what I needed! I cannot thank the MrsHerculesGlam enough for making my day unforgettable. “Rie was a lifesaver! I had initially reached out to a different vendor in September of 2024 and we had an ongoing conversation while I considered pricing through November. We had a verbal agreement to work together but before she sent me her contract she ghosted me. I thought it was because the holidays were coming up and we all get busy at the end of the year. But mid-January come along, I had not heard back, and I was a little over two months away from my wedding! I reached out to a ton of makeup artists, and Rie was among the first to respond. She was so understanding from the get-go and her kindness paired with her makeup style was what sold me! Immediately, I knew she was who I wanted to work for. Rie provided makeup services for me and five of my six bridesmaids by herself. She was even able to work with me to find time to do a makeup trial despite both our busy schedules (getting married in the off season I'm sure helped). She worked so efficiently and even finished before our scheduled time, and provided us all with little touch up kits. I tend to not wear too much makeup and the same goes for most of my bridesmaids, and Rie was able to take her "natural makeup" style and personalize it to everyone. I only wear makeup on special occasions, and when I do, I tend to be hyper aware of my face and the makeup on it. But Rie's application was so good, that I did not think about the makeup on my face once throughout the ten hour day. The natural makeup style might not be for everyone, the same way full glam is not for me, but if you lean that way, I highly recommend working with Rie!”
