As my experience grew I started receiving requests from people all over Pittsburgh to add a unique twist to their sweetest moments, so much so that in September of 2021, I quit my corporate job to bake full-time! I absolutely love being able to enhance a wedding, baby shower or bridesmaid proposal with some rare, scrumptious treats that everyone is delighted to see and taste.

Hello! My name is Ava. I’m a wife, mother to five and a cake and cookie artist. My grandma was a custom cake artist in NY for many years before she passed in 2018 so I grew up watching her create works of art. I would like to say that baking and creating runs in my blood and is not only a hobby of mines, but a true passion.

I enjoy baking, so when my daughter needed to raise funds for her missions trip we started "baking for a cause." Our baking endeavor to raise support for my daughter's missions trip has blossomed into my passion and a full bakery business! For me, it is more about creating a new design or personalizing a product. It's about doing something for someone else! Ever since I was 7 years old, I told everyone that when I grew up I was going to be a chef. I grew up with that idea and never considered a back up plan. I pursued that dream and attended culinary school. Funnily enough, I never had much interest in baking. I wanted to be the chef and owner of a restaurant one day. After graduating and working in restaurants, I was crushed to see that a handful of places weren't sending out fresh, non frozen foods. So, I would go home and start baking, just for fun. It quickly turned into an obsession. Thanks to my family for the push, I am now here. I hope to work with you + create something special!

I hold a BS in Marketing and a BA in Business from DeSales University. I have trained with world-renowned sugar artists to expand my cake artistry skills. I am a national competitor with many awards for cake design as well as cake flavors, cupcake design, and cookie design. Over the years I have honed my craft into making beautiful and delicious custom cakes.

The “sweets” business is the only business I’ve ever known. I’ve been decorating cakes professionally for over 15 years! I come from a family who loves dessert. We believe that if you eat something savory, it must follow with sweet. I have always found great joy in creating pretty little works of art that (best of all) you could EAT! So when considering my career ambitions, it came naturally that I wanted to pursue my love for serving people with personalized sweets. I believe that flavor is just as important as appearance. I thoroughly enjoy what I do and I believe that if you love what you do, that joy overflows into your work.

Clay’s Bakery opened its doors on October 1, 1990 by Bill and Denise Bones, alongside Denise’s mother Barbara Clark, who retired to Florida in 1997. To this day, the bakery is still owned and operated by the Bones family. The bakery was named in honor of Denise’s father Clayton Earl Clark, III who passed away the year before opening the shop. He was an Sergeant for the Tredyffrin Township Police Department, many of his brothers in blue continue to show their support for Denise and her family by visiting the bakery often.

Pastries A-La Carte is featured through many local establishments such as: Aramark (in association with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pirates), The Georgetown Centre, LeMont, George Washington Hotel, and more.
