How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“Amber is an absolutely amazing makeup artist and all around person. It was so wonderful to have her do my makeup for my wedding. She created varied looks for myself and the bridesmaids who each had our own tastes, and that makeup did not come off despite humidity, dancing, and sweating! We did a trial together before the wedding day, which was almost perfect. I gave her a few minor notes and she nailed it for the actual wedding day! Amber is responsive, professional, and so friendly. Her wonderful personality made the morning of my wedding fun and relaxing. “I am a Filipino and so is my bridal party. I really needed someone who understood an Asian face. I also needed someone who could listen to me, my needs and those of my party to help us all look and feel our best. Rie delivered and more! From planning the day and on our trial, Rie was very kind, open to suggestions and creative when it came to my vision. She was patient to try out the different hair dos I wanted to sample. On the day, she amped up her talent and made me look even more beautiful than when she met me for a trial. Even my FIL thought so! You know it’s real when men notice! Haha. She also took care of my mother, who is hard to please, but was able to say good things about her hair and make up that same day too. Overall what a beautiful experience. “Kelsey was absolutely amazing from start to finish. From the moment we reached out, she was professional, super responsive, and so helpful with all of our questions—whether it was over email or text. At our trial, she gave great advice ahead of time about styles, lashes, hair extensions and accessories clips, which made the whole process stress-free. She did an incredible job working with both me and my wife, accommodating our different styles. My wife went for a more natural, barely-there look, while I wanted soft glam, and Kelsey nailed both perfectly! On the wedding day, she showed up ready to go and made the whole getting-ready process so easy and fun. Best of all, our hair and makeup held up beautifully all night long—through all the hugs, dancing, and happy tears! Beyond her talent, Kelsey just fit right in. She was so easy to talk to and immediately felt like part of the family while we were all getting ready together. I can’t recommend Kelsey enough. “Honestly I don’t have one bad thing to say about the make up it was perfect, I loved the make up and hair it made me feel like a Barbie. I did the trial first, which I do recommend it, because we changed a few things from it for the wedding and that just made it exactly what I wanted. The reason why I’m giving it 4 stars it’s because of her not being based in Phoenix so it makes it less flexible. I asked her like 5 months before the wedding if she could remove just the hair of one of my bridesmaids because she got pregnant and wasn’t coming, and she said no because of the travel she already was counting with that money which I understood. Then for the trial, I got my date (which is hard to request specific dates with my work schedule ) and she canceled last minute ( in her favor it was a really good reason). Then I tried to book it the next month like we talked about and she had another issue and couldn’t travel to do it, so we didn’t have the trial until a few weeks before the wedding, which was okay but I just feel like I was being very flexible to someone that was not being flexible to me at all. And even though she said she doesn’t charge for travel fees, she did charge me 260 for the drive to one area in Phoenix to the venue, which I think it’s a little high (but I’ve never done this before so it might be normal). And my last complain is she told me she was going to give me a touch up kit for the wedding, and when I asked for it she gave me a used lipstick and some setting powder with no brush or sponge or anything, that did not help at all to retouch my make up after some tears. She probably just ran out of them. But like I said at the beginning I have zero complains about the actual make up and hair, it was perfect I do recommend her a lot if you live in LA, if you are out of her area just keep in mind there won’t be a lot of flexibility. (I put pictures of the wedding and trial )”
