How much does a wedding photographer cost?

Wedding photographers early in their careers can cost as little as $1,500. Super experienced photographers, as seen in magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, can cost upwards of $30,000. The range is wide, but, in general, you can expect to spend around 10% of your budget on wedding photography. Rates also vary based on wedding length, the services you want, and location. A photographer based in an area with a lower cost of living, for example, will be less than one based in New York or San Francisco.

How much should we tip our wedding photographer?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 10% of their rate, or at least $100. If they’re bringing second photographers or assistants, an additional $50 to $75 per person is an appropriate and nice gesture.

What questions should we ask wedding photographers?

Aside from logistical questions about packages, pricing, and availability, it’s also important to use your conversation to get a sense of their personality. This person will be with you and your loved ones every step of your wedding day, including, if you want, in the dressing room! It’s very important that you and your partner both feel comfortable with them and their working style. Talk about your venue, how you want to feel when you look at your photos, and which photos from their portfolio you like best.

“If you're looking for the photographer to capture all the love and joy you feel with your special person, I'm here to tell you, this is it. You found him. Does the idea of spending thousands of dollars for wedding photos scare you, because you can't see the photos right away, no refunds, no exchanges, no returns, and no do-overs, you are not alone. Do the scary thing. Invest your money on a photographer, but make sure you book Jason Rhee. I had a visual aesthetic in mind, but I also wasnt sure how to describe it. As a hobby photographer who mostly takes pictures of her dogs, or snaps pretty scenery and yummy food on vacation, I didnt know how to find to find somebody to capture our special day with the same romantic, yet slightly silly POV. I follow David Suh on IG, because he makes it look fun and easy to get photos you can proudly display, but we couldnt afford to fly him out for our wedding. We wanted somebody who gave similar energy. Instead, I spent hours on Google, Zola, Wedding Wire, the Knot, Reddit, Instagram, and reached out to Facebook groups like Subtle Asian Weddings and Ologies for inspiration. After weeks of pouring through lists of local photographers, reading price packages, scouring albums/portfolios/pages trying to find examples to describe the aesthetic I was looking for, and looking for photographers who evoke the same emotion, I found Jason Rhee. We set up a meeting, he passed the vibe check with flying colors. We had 6 months to plan our reception. We were on a budget. We needed somebody familiar with photographing not one, but three dogs at a wedding. We had an intimate (under 40ppl) wedding, with a LOT of camera-shy introverts (ourselves included!), and we wanted to get amazing pictures but have no experience posing in front of the camera. Where do we put our hands? What is our best angle? Is there enough light at the venue? Should I be serious, serene, or laughing? Don't worry, book Jason Rhee. Jason made the process of working together very easy and it felt like a true collaboration. He helped us plan within our budget. He was as invested as we were in creating our timeline, ensuring we had time for the photos we wanted, and understanding our wedding photography priorities. He provided prompts!!! He also coordinated with our videographer. Everything was clearly outlined in the contract. Our teaser album was done about two weeks after the reception (rest of the album should be done in another two weeks, which is amazing turnaround time considering the hundreds if not thousands of photos taken that day) I’ve always been self-conscious in front of a camera, but Jason was the best at boosting my confidence and posing us in a way that felt natural and look beautiful. We had many laughs along the way. Sadly, one of pups passed shortly before the big day, so we had to make it through one of the saddest months, alongside the chaos of planning our big day. Jason navigated it all with grace and went the extra mile to make sure we got all the photos we were hoping for. We got so many compliments (both during and after the wedding) from friends and family.”

“From Day 1 of communication: Lauren was absolutely so professional. She was super easy to talk to, really direct & transparent, and helped us figure out a package that worked best for us. She gave us rights to own & use all of our photos (given a good old tagged link to her profile on social media). —this was extremely important to us! Day 2: we met over the phone to go over things & she again, was soooo prompt and professional. She took incredible irreplaceable pictures/video of our first look. She got us the sweetest previews so incredibly quickly. She recognized how to motivate us (aka a competition) & made it a race to see how fast we could get through our 100 person wedding taking pictures with each guest. She gave us the most generous wedding gift our vendors gave us wedding gifts—sweet freaking above & beyond) & she got our sweet little pup a fantastic present again too. Day 5: she just got us all of our wedding photos back. The entire suite. There’s SOOOOO many pictures. She did a phenomenal job not only capturing our favorite moments, but really giving us the freedom to pick which photos were really valuable to us. She took time & care & really has an incredible eye. As if we weren’t totally obsessed already…Our friends got married a week after us & used a different photographer, and honestly, seeing their photos that were 3x’s as expensive and a quarter of the quality, we were EVEN MORE validated going with Lauren. I highly recommend her services. I can’t wait to get pregnant in the next few months, & I’m 10000000% going to ask her for some epic pregnancy shoots. 100/10”

During our micro wedding photoshoot, he arrived early and did a full scan of the location to make sure we got the most optimal lighting and angle. This was the first time my husband and I ever took photos together so Justin's jokes and guidance really helped us. He made us feel so comfortable during the photoshoot which showed in the final results; we have so many candid photos that we love! Fast forward to wedding day, ALL of the photos were SO SO SO beautiful, carefully crafted detail shots, and just so perfect! Candace throughout both events was super friendly and personable, but still professional. She was amazing at corralling our large families for group photos, and seamlessly moving around the wedding day, and capturing everything! We liked how she sent a questionnaire a few weeks ahead of the wedding to ask us about minor details that she might not be aware of, and any photo inspiration to make sure we were on the same page. “I couldn’t say better things about Marilyn if I tried. She was the first photographer who’s portfolio we fell for in our search, and while trying to budget and explore other options, we made our way back to Marilyn and questioned why we ever even bothered looking anywhere else. We did a round of engagement photos with her first, after an initial zoom to meet and get to know her. From the zoom alone we could tell right away what kind of sweet, wonderful, magical person she was. I felt like I was talking to an old friend immediately. During our engagement shoot, which myself and my now husband were SO nervous for (we are both awkward and camera shy, and I don’t know how to stop running my mouth during photos because of it) she made us laugh SO many times and immediately melted our anxieties away. We knew we made the perfect choice in a person to take care of us on our wedding day in that moment. We have so far received our previews, and we are simply in love. Marilyn captured intimate moments, fun moments, and beautiful, emotional moments that helped us feel like we were reliving our day all over again. She guided us through the day, took us to the best spots, got the photos we asked for, all without either of us having to think about a single thing or logistic at any point. She was on it. She is and was such a treat and added the kindest most comforting attitude and energy to our day, and all of our family and bridal party agree along with us (we got quite a few “where and how did you find her??”s). We also added a second shooter via Marilyn (who was also sincerely lovely) for just one hour, during our pre-ceremony and ceremony, for a little extra coverage and timeline speed, and a roll of film which was so much fun too. If you love artistic and stylized photos, and are seeking someone with both a great eye and wonderful, calming presence, I mean it, look no further. We are so happy we found Marilyn.”

Photography has always been a lifelong passion of mine, I picked up my first camera as a gift from my dad when I was 14 years old. Never in a million years would I have thought that my lifelong hobby could eventually become my career. I focused on my future, working my way through college and grad school to achieve my license to practice, but a part of me realized that I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to go on adventures and meet a lot of new people. So in 2019, I took that risk, changed my hours from full time to part time and put more focus on my photography. I booked my first gig later that year and have never looked back.

“Randall was recommended by our videographer (Call it Captivation Films, who we recommend). We really enjoyed his gallery and how natural his photos looked. We spoke to a few other photographers before him, but during our 1st video meeting he vibed well with us; he and I are both Fil-Am with history of working with pediatric patients (he as a PTA, me as a RN), and he and my husband shared a love for the same teams (Dodgers and Lakers). We were quick to book him after our meeting and are extremely happy with our decision to work with him! The photography packages he offers and his prices are amazing. Randall was great with communication and with providing us with recommendations (ie what to bring for flat lay, helping us pose, etc) prior to and day of the wedding. He did a site tour of our venue where we got to meet him and his kids in person. Prior to the ceremony, Randall worked with me, while the 2nd photographer worked with my husband. My husband said that the 2nd photographer fitted in well like one of the boys. He gave us a preview of the photos 1 week after our wedding and the full gallery of our wedding about 8-9 weeks after our wedding. We are so happy with all the photos! She traveled all the way to Carbondale, CO from Philadelphia for our shoot and was extremely flexible and accommodating in terms of the types of shots/events we were looking for her to shoot. She was at the rehearsal dinner, getting ready morning, first-look, ceremony and reception and from what we've seen of the photos so far absolutely knocked it out of the park. She was extremely professional in how she was able to work with and coordinate our wedding planner, was very good about planning out the shots ahead of time (shot lists, made sure we had sunset photos, etc.), and was also extremely fun and spontaneous during our shoots and made it feel so so natural.
