How much does a wedding photographer cost?

Wedding photographers early in their careers can cost as little as $1,500. Super experienced photographers, as seen in magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, can cost upwards of $30,000. The range is wide, but, in general, you can expect to spend around 10% of your budget on wedding photography. Rates also vary based on wedding length, the services you want, and location. A photographer based in an area with a lower cost of living, for example, will be less than one based in New York or San Francisco.

How much should we tip our wedding photographer?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 10% of their rate, or at least $100. If they’re bringing second photographers or assistants, an additional $50 to $75 per person is an appropriate and nice gesture.

What questions should we ask wedding photographers?

Aside from logistical questions about packages, pricing, and availability, it’s also important to use your conversation to get a sense of their personality. This person will be with you and your loved ones every step of your wedding day, including, if you want, in the dressing room! It’s very important that you and your partner both feel comfortable with them and their working style. Talk about your venue, how you want to feel when you look at your photos, and which photos from their portfolio you like best.

Day 2: we met over the phone to go over things & she again, was soooo prompt and professional. We didn’t love how other photographers were highly intrusive in our love story or the nuances of our love story. As contractors ourselves, we wanted someone that was clear, concise, and transparent with communication & she exceeded our expectations. She was able to accommodate our request to have our Aussie puppy a part of our wedding & our engagement photos. It didn’t hurt that she has a sweet pup that looks virtually identical to our lil boy. Day 3: we meet for the engagement shoot in a DREAM location that was near & dear to our heart, she bought our pup a toy he loves to this day sooooo much! She helped us break out of our awkward selves in front of the camera enough to get some incredible shots that we used for our wedding website, invitations. Day 4: she arrived on time, gave us exceptional service on the day of our wedding. She collaborated seamlessly with our other vendors she’d never met prior. She took incredible irreplaceable pictures/video of our first look. She got us the sweetest previews so incredibly quickly. She recognized how to motivate us (aka a competition) & made it a race to see how fast we could get through our 100 person wedding taking pictures with each guest. She gave us the most generous wedding gift our vendors gave us wedding gifts—sweet freaking above & beyond) & she got our sweet little pup a fantastic present again too. Day 5: she just got us all of our wedding photos back. The entire suite. There’s SOOOOO many pictures. She did a phenomenal job not only capturing our favorite moments, but really giving us the freedom to pick which photos were really valuable to us. She took time & care & really has an incredible eye. As if we weren’t totally obsessed already…Our friends got married a week after us & used a different photographer, and honestly, seeing their photos that were 3x’s as expensive and a quarter of the quality, we were EVEN MORE validated going with Lauren. I highly recommend her services. I can’t wait to get pregnant in the next few months, & I’m 10000000% going to ask her for some epic pregnancy shoots. 100/10”

“We booked Tomi Photopositive for our October 2024 wedding in Genesee Park, Colorado, and got exactly what all of his other perfect reviews rave about; Relentless compassion and positivity, regular and professional communication, timeliness in every regard, and of course an amazing collection of photos we get to cherish for the rest of our lives. We struggled to find an affordable photographer for our simple and small wedding. Some quotes came in exorbitantly high. One even wanted us to sign a contract before we could even schedule a virtual meet & greet to see if we'd all vibe. We found Tomi on Wedding wire, and we loved his portfolio (and his pricing almost seemed too good to be true based on his work), so we reached out. We set up a zoom call, and it was clear right away that Tomi loves what he does, and that he cares about his clients. This initial meeting was everything a nervous couple could hope for, it silenced much of the fear of booking someone we knew very little about. Though not included in the wedding photography package, we booked an engagement session with Tomi. I am so glad we did! It was worth every penny! Aside from great photos themselves, it gave us a good feel for how he works ahead of the wedding. Plus, it was fun, and we got some great shots! Tomi will go out of his way for his clients. One example is that he had never been to our venue (Chief Hosa Lodge - if you're looking for a wedding of 35-65 guests) before, so he went to the venue before the wedding to get a feel for all the best spots. He did this on his own time, and did not charge us extra for it. While we had originally hoped for a sunny day and sunset photos overlooking the mountains, we got snow and fog. Tomi seized the opportunity and turned the "disappointing" weather into one of the more memorable aspects of our day. For any couple who is considering not using a photographer, we strongly caution against it. we originally wanted to go that route or was looking for someone cheap (1000). However, finding Tomi was a blessing from God, and his pricing is more than worth it! His photos are eons better than anything you could hope for from an amateur photographer or cell phone grab. And seeing the final polished photos a couple months after the fact is like getting to experience your special day all over again. If you're still reading this, stop and book him. You will not be disappointed.”

“I couldn’t say better things about Marilyn if I tried. She was the first photographer who’s portfolio we fell for in our search, and while trying to budget and explore other options, we made our way back to Marilyn and questioned why we ever even bothered looking anywhere else. We did a round of engagement photos with her first, after an initial zoom to meet and get to know her. From the zoom alone we could tell right away what kind of sweet, wonderful, magical person she was. I felt like I was talking to an old friend immediately. During our engagement shoot, which myself and my now husband were SO nervous for (we are both awkward and camera shy, and I don’t know how to stop running my mouth during photos because of it) she made us laugh SO many times and immediately melted our anxieties away. We knew we made the perfect choice in a person to take care of us on our wedding day in that moment. We have so far received our previews, and we are simply in love. Marilyn captured intimate moments, fun moments, and beautiful, emotional moments that helped us feel like we were reliving our day all over again. She guided us through the day, took us to the best spots, got the photos we asked for, all without either of us having to think about a single thing or logistic at any point. She was on it. She is and was such a treat and added the kindest most comforting attitude and energy to our day, and all of our family and bridal party agree along with us (we got quite a few “where and how did you find her??”s). We also added a second shooter via Marilyn (who was also sincerely lovely) for just one hour, during our pre-ceremony and ceremony, for a little extra coverage and timeline speed, and a roll of film which was so much fun too. If you love artistic and stylized photos, and are seeking someone with both a great eye and wonderful, calming presence, I mean it, look no further. We are so happy we found Marilyn.”
