How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“I had Cat and Alex as my makeup artist and hair stylist and they were absolutely amazing!! I used them for two days (welcome party and wedding) for me, my mother, and my 6 bridesmaids. Honestly I was blown away on my trial and knew I would book them immediately. Makeup was extremely professional, Cat asked what I wanted, style etc. She had good hygiene when using makeup products: disinfecting, using disposable brushes, setting aside used tools. Horrified to say that unfortunately this was not my experience in all the makeup trials I did. Secondly, the makeup was a full trial, not just a teaser, which again is not always the experience I had.. Cat asked what I liked and disliked and took good notes. The makeup is GOOD. It is polished and stays on well. She locks everything in and it did not budge with sweat, rain, humidity. As for hair, I was really specific that I wanted BIG hollywood curls with extensions. Alex DELIVERED!! This girl knows hair! She is quick and the hair looks EXACT to the picture I showed. I had my wedding in New Orleans so they flew out. Everything about working with them was such a pleasure and so professional. Cat was so responsive every time, easy adjustments, and the contract was straightforward. They showed up right on time and were rockstars with everyone. Case in point - it rained heavily and then was really hot. The Makeup STAYED! It seriously did not budge one bit- for me, my mom, and all the bridesmaids. Of course curls will drop a bit from rain, but my hair was still stayed curled and the extensions were so good, everyone thought it was my actual hair. She incorporated the fancy clip that I had purchased, and the long curls lasted all night long. I even looked great after I removed the extensions and rode out an additional full day with the curls! I was so grateful that the look held. I had an hour long photo shoot in 90 degree sunny heat and was sweating like crazy. The hair didn't budge, fall or frizz. I got so many compliments! Everyone walking by was complimenting my look, telling me how beautiful I was. I even had cars honking as they drove by! Afterwards, I looked great walking into the reception dinner with my family. I did not EVER have to touch my hair or adjust it. For a Florida girl with long, thick, wavy natural hair- this is unheard of in the heat and humidity! MrsHercules worked a miracle on my hair. For my make-up- my face lasted all day and night too! I was sure that it had melted off in the sun during our photos, but when we were done I went to freshen up and nothing had changed. I was still 100% perfect. What a relief! I was so worried that I was going to walk into dinner like a hot mess and I had nothing to worry about at all- MrsHercules had me covered! I did touch up my lips, but that was just because we had a bunch of photos of us kissing. She even gave a little touch up kit that was perfect. “Honestly I don’t have one bad thing to say about the make up it was perfect, I loved the make up and hair it made me feel like a Barbie. I did the trial first, which I do recommend it, because we changed a few things from it for the wedding and that just made it exactly what I wanted. The reason why I’m giving it 4 stars it’s because of her not being based in Phoenix so it makes it less flexible. I asked her like 5 months before the wedding if she could remove just the hair of one of my bridesmaids because she got pregnant and wasn’t coming, and she said no because of the travel she already was counting with that money which I understood. Then for the trial, I got my date (which is hard to request specific dates with my work schedule ) and she canceled last minute ( in her favor it was a really good reason). Then I tried to book it the next month like we talked about and she had another issue and couldn’t travel to do it, so we didn’t have the trial until a few weeks before the wedding, which was okay but I just feel like I was being very flexible to someone that was not being flexible to me at all. And even though she said she doesn’t charge for travel fees, she did charge me 260 for the drive to one area in Phoenix to the venue, which I think it’s a little high (but I’ve never done this before so it might be normal). And my last complain is she told me she was going to give me a touch up kit for the wedding, and when I asked for it she gave me a used lipstick and some setting powder with no brush or sponge or anything, that did not help at all to retouch my make up after some tears. She probably just ran out of them. But like I said at the beginning I have zero complains about the actual make up and hair, it was perfect I do recommend her a lot if you live in LA, if you are out of her area just keep in mind there won’t be a lot of flexibility. (I put pictures of the wedding and trial )”

“Rie was a lifesaver! I had initially reached out to a different vendor in September of 2024 and we had an ongoing conversation while I considered pricing through November. We had a verbal agreement to work together but before she sent me her contract she ghosted me. I thought it was because the holidays were coming up and we all get busy at the end of the year. But mid-January come along, I had not heard back, and I was a little over two months away from my wedding! I reached out to a ton of makeup artists, and Rie was among the first to respond. She was so understanding from the get-go and her kindness paired with her makeup style was what sold me! Immediately, I knew she was who I wanted to work for. Rie provided makeup services for me and five of my six bridesmaids by herself. She was even able to work with me to find time to do a makeup trial despite both our busy schedules (getting married in the off season I'm sure helped). She worked so efficiently and even finished before our scheduled time, and provided us all with little touch up kits. I tend to not wear too much makeup and the same goes for most of my bridesmaids, and Rie was able to take her "natural makeup" style and personalize it to everyone. I only wear makeup on special occasions, and when I do, I tend to be hyper aware of my face and the makeup on it. But Rie's application was so good, that I did not think about the makeup on my face once throughout the ten hour day. The natural makeup style might not be for everyone, the same way full glam is not for me, but if you lean that way, I highly recommend working with Rie!”

“Jasmine & Co was great to work with and communicate with, as well as having competitive prices. They were well worth every penny we spent to hire them for my wedding for my bridal hair and makeup as well as for my bridal party. Jasmine, Alicia and Katie all killed it in the best possible way. I loved my trial when we did it, but decided to add hair extensions and I’m SO glad I did! Alicia was a wizard when it came to put them in and doing my hairstyle. My hair and make up went perfectly with my dress & veil. I have never felt so beautiful in my life and they executed my bridal look above and beyond what I could’ve ever hoped for. My bridesmaids and Maid of Honor, and our mother’s were absolute perfection. Everyone had very natural looking makeup with a little glam. It was perfect for our outdoor wedding. We were a quiet group lol probably more than other bridal parties. But we still had a great time! There are truly not enough “Thank you’s” for me to say, but I am so grateful for their time and talents that they shared to make my day and myself as beautiful as it could be.
