How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

It held beautifully all day and night through wind and nonstop dancing. My bridesmaids and mom also looked gorgeous, with styles that fit each person’s hair type and vibe. Alex was calm, focused, and incredibly efficient, but she never made anyone feel rushed. She cared about how everyone felt walking out of that chair. Catherine was a huge help behind the scenes with planning the schedule. She organized the timeline for hair and makeup so well that we stayed on track the entire morning without feeling on a timer. That kind of planning and attention to detail made the day run much more smoothly and let me enjoy the getting-ready part instead of stressing about timing. On the wedding day, Rachel and Heather worked their magic. Their attention to detail were evident. The makeup was flawless without feeling heavy or overdone, my bridesmaids and my mom and now husband's mom all decided to try lashes for the first time :). The hairstyles were elegant and held up beautifully throughout the day, despite hours of dancing and celebrating. Each look was personalized and perfectly suited to each member of the bridal party. From day 1, I felt like I was in good hands for my wedding hair and make up. The team was willing to make things work - however I needed them to work! For example, we didn't know at first if we would get ready at the salon or my venue but I was able to talk things out with Michelle and we came up with an action plan to get everybody ready in time! I was able to have a few of our close family members get hair and make up done with us, because the salon had all hands on deck for my wedding day! I also needed someone who could listen to me, my needs and those of my party to help us all look and feel our best. Rie delivered and more! From planning the day and on our trial, Rie was very kind, open to suggestions and creative when it came to my vision. She was patient to try out the different hair dos I wanted to sample. On the day, she amped up her talent and made me look even more beautiful than when she met me for a trial. Even my FIL thought so! You know it’s real when men notice! Haha. She also took care of my mother, who is hard to please, but was able to say good things about her hair and make up that same day too. Overall what a beautiful experience.
