How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“I used One Salon & Bridal for my wedding day hair and make up for me and 15 others! Everybody at One Salon & Bridal was extremely helpful and communicative!! From day 1, I felt like I was in good hands for my wedding hair and make up. The team was willing to make things work - however I needed them to work! For example, we didn't know at first if we would get ready at the salon or my venue but I was able to talk things out with Michelle and we came up with an action plan to get everybody ready in time! I was able to have a few of our close family members get hair and make up done with us, because the salon had all hands on deck for my wedding day! “Rie was a lifesaver! I had initially reached out to a different vendor in September of 2024 and we had an ongoing conversation while I considered pricing through November. We had a verbal agreement to work together but before she sent me her contract she ghosted me. I thought it was because the holidays were coming up and we all get busy at the end of the year. But mid-January come along, I had not heard back, and I was a little over two months away from my wedding! I reached out to a ton of makeup artists, and Rie was among the first to respond. She was so understanding from the get-go and her kindness paired with her makeup style was what sold me! Immediately, I knew she was who I wanted to work for. Rie provided makeup services for me and five of my six bridesmaids by herself. She was even able to work with me to find time to do a makeup trial despite both our busy schedules (getting married in the off season I'm sure helped). She worked so efficiently and even finished before our scheduled time, and provided us all with little touch up kits. I tend to not wear too much makeup and the same goes for most of my bridesmaids, and Rie was able to take her "natural makeup" style and personalize it to everyone. I only wear makeup on special occasions, and when I do, I tend to be hyper aware of my face and the makeup on it. But Rie's application was so good, that I did not think about the makeup on my face once throughout the ten hour day. The natural makeup style might not be for everyone, the same way full glam is not for me, but if you lean that way, I highly recommend working with Rie!”

“I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about Kate at Jasmine & Co. I was feeling a little overwhelmed going into my wedding day especially since I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted for my hair. But Kate was so calming and professional and I think one of the favorite parts of the day was getting my hair and makeup done! She nailed the makeup look I had in mind, I showed her a few inspiration photos and somehow she brought it all together in a way that looked even better than I imagined and the makeup held up perfectly all day. What impressed me even more was how she styled my shoulder-length hair. I didn’t have a solid reference photo to work from, but Kate worked her magic and created the most beautiful soft, romantic style that felt so me. I got so many compliments and I have been even trying to replicate what she did so I could have something like my 'wedding hair' at other events. She also did makeup for a few of my family members, and they all loved their looks too. Everyone looked polished and radiant, but still totally like themselves. I was really overwhelmed with the options for hair and makeup but I'm so so so glad I went with Jasmine's company.”
